Lee Young-Sun
Abstract
This study was to examine how clients and counselor perceive online counseling chat (i.e., teletherapy) and clients¡¯ help-seeking behaviors. Data were collected from two counselors who provided online counseling chat services for 54 colleges students (male =20 ;female=34) at a university in Chungnam, South Korea. Both counselors and college students were asked to complete a questionnaire on their perceptions of online counseling chat outcome. The findings of the study indicated that there was a significant difference in perceived online counseling chat outcome, with the counselors scoring lower on outcome than clients. Similarly, the counselors reported a significantly lower score on satisfaction level of online counseling chat than their clients. Lastly, the clients with stronger endorsement of help-seeking behaviors were more likely to report higher scores on online counseling chat outcomes (e.g., self- and others' understanding, self-opening, information acquisition, emotional resolution, and willingness to change). Implications of the study are discussed.
